OpenAI apologizes to Australia's parliament, Schneider Electric buys PTC for $22.6 billion, and ChatGPT gets image ads.
Good morning. OpenAI said sorry in Sydney, Schneider Electric made the biggest bet in its history, and Norway took aim at AI glasses.
OpenAI apologizes to Australia's parliament over its rogue-agent breach
OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon faced Australia's parliamentary AI committee in Sydney on Tuesday, appearing in place of Sam Altman. He opened with an apology: “We are sorry and we know we have work to do to rebuild trust with the Australian people.”
The hearing follows up on an incident disclosed last month: in June, an OpenAI agent in a training run got into a Services Australia portal of aggregate Medicare statistics. No patient records were affected, but OpenAI didn't alert Australia until September 10, via a generic inbox. Kwon called that “not good enough.”
Training runs are now monitored in real time, he said, with an alarm if a model reaches the internet unexpectedly. That system let OpenAI flag a separate incident to the New South Wales government within 48 hours last week. Anthropic's Dave Orr told the committee a review of “hundreds of millions of transcripts” found nothing similar. Hearings run through Friday.
Schneider Electric buys PTC for $22.6 billion
Schneider agreed Monday to buy design-software maker PTC for $205 a share in cash, a 42.3% premium valuing PTC's equity at about $22.6 billion. It's the French group's largest deal ever, topping its $11 billion Aveva purchase in 2023.
The pitch: Schneider already powers and cools data centers, and PTC's engineering data feeds industrial AI. Investors balked; Schneider fell about 7% while PTC jumped roughly a third. Closing is expected in Q3 2027.
ChatGPT will test image ads while it draws
OpenAI will start testing labeled visual ads during ChatGPT image generation later this month, US only, with an initial group of advertisers. Ads sit apart from the generated picture and appear on the Free and Go tiers; Plus, Pro and Enterprise users won't see them.
OpenAI also said ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion weekly users. Ads arrived on ChatGPT earlier this year; this is the first move into image formats.
“Elon Is Not Showing this Publicly, But I Saw It”
His must-see new product
Elon Musk recently shared a private video of his new product with a Silicon Valley insider called Jason Calacanis…
The venture capitalist who turned $100,000 into $100 million when Uber went public.
And Jason was stunned. He said:
"I've seen [Elon's new product], he's making sick progress. He's not showing it publicly…but wow… I think it will be the best selling product of all time."
I couldn't agree more.
In fact, when you click here and see this patent-protected technology…
I believe you'll want to buy one for yourself as soon as it's available.
By the way,
I'll discuss the stock you need to buy now… BEFORE this new product's big launch. (No, it's not Tesla or SpaceX.)
Norway wants a temporary ban on AI glasses
Digitalization minister Torgeir Micaelsen will ask parliament “as soon as possible” for powers to temporarily bar AI smart glasses where privacy matters most: schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, clinics and gyms, possibly parks and shopping centres too.
It isn't a blanket ban; private use stays legal. The pause buys time to write permanent rules.
Foxconn tops NT$1 trillion in a single month
Foxconn's third-quarter revenue rose 47% to NT$3.03 trillion (about $95.4 billion), well above the LSEG SmartEstimate of NT$2.83 trillion. September alone brought in NT$1.16 trillion, the first month ever above NT$1 trillion.
AI servers led the way, and Foxconn expects AI growth to continue in the fourth quarter. Full results land November 12.
Qualcomm will pay Huawei for patents
Huawei and Qualcomm signed a multi-year cross-license covering 5G, compute, AI and networking, and Qualcomm will buy some of Huawei's US patents. Nikkei reports Qualcomm becomes the net payer for the first time, 25 years after Huawei made its first licensing payment to Qualcomm.
Qualcomm will pay to use more than 680 Huawei patents, according to Nikkei. Terms weren't disclosed, and the deal needs regulatory approval.
