| Good morning. Here is what happened in tech over the last 24 hours. Anthropic locks up $10 billion in compute. A court frees AI shopping agents. And Huawei folds an 18-inch laptop in half. ![A view of Earth at night with glowing network lights](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1451187580459-43490279c0fa?w=600&q=80&auto=format&fit=crop) FEATURED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE • 2 DAYS AGO Anthropic buys $10 billion of compute from a seven-month-old startup Anthropic just signed a six-year, $10 billion deal for computing power. The supplier is Volta, a cloud startup that did not exist seven months ago. Volta will deliver the capacity from Bitdeer's site in Norway, running Nvidia's newest Vera Rubin chips. Norway helps the math. Its power is cheap hydro, and the cold air cuts cooling costs. The stakes are plain. Frontier labs now sign compute contracts bigger than most companies' yearly sales. A brand-new provider can win billions in one deal. Everyone is betting AI demand stays this hot for years. The Ninth Circuit threw out an order that had blocked Perplexity's Comet browser from shopping on Amazon. The reasoning matters. Judges said the user, not Perplexity, is the one accessing Amazon. So the hacking law Amazon cited does not fit. This clears a path for AI agents that buy and browse on your behalf. Retailers wanted the power to lock them out. For now, the agents get to keep shopping. The new MateBook Fold runs Huawei's own Kirin X90 Plus chip and its HarmonyOS software. It also showed the MateBook Pro S, which Huawei calls its lightest laptop yet at about 798 grams. Pre-orders opened yesterday, with sales starting August 14 in China first. Huawei keeps proving it can build high-end hardware without US chips. That is the part Washington did not want to see. The round tripled its value to about $3.3 billion in roughly six months. Olix builds specialized processors for AI, using light instead of only electricity to move data. The pitch is lower cost and less reliance on scarce parts. Backers include Arm and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings. Nvidia still owns this market. But investors keep funding anyone with a credible shot at cheaper AI compute. First Olix hardware is due in 2027. Five teams adopted a policy on how large language models can be used in the core code. The line they drew is clear. AI can read, analyze, and review code. AI cannot write the code that ships. Contributors must disclose when they used a model. Open-source maintainers are drowning in AI-generated pull requests. Rust just said quality still needs a human. Expect other big projects to copy this. Anaconda is the Python platform millions of developers use. Enkrypt tests AI models and agents for security holes. The numbers explain the deal. In two months, Enkrypt scanned 25,000 tool servers that connect AI to company data. It found more than 143,000 vulnerabilities. Companies are handing AI agents real access to their systems. That access is now a target. Security is becoming the next big AI spending line. Its car has no steering wheel and two rows of facing seats. Watch a full ride in the purpose-built cab before the meter turns on. It is installing roughly 100 a day. [**Valar Atomics**](https://techstartups.com/2026/08/03/valar-atomics-raises-1-billion-series-b-led-by-sequoia-to-mass-produce-nuclear-reactors-for-ai-data-centers/) closed a $1 billion round led by Sequoia to mass-produce small nuclear reactors for AI data centers. Its first reactor already powered an Nvidia cluster. [**Google**](https://www.business-standard.com/technology/tech-news/google-shifts-ai-leadership-to-california-in-race-against-anthropic-openai-126080600119%5F1.html) pulled its AI leadership into Mountain View to catch OpenAI and Anthropic. DeepMind's Demis Hassabis steps back to chairman, and Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over AI research and operations. STAT OF THE DAY AI demand is squeezing gamers. Nvidia's RTX 5090 listed at $1,999\. It now sells for double that as memory costs climb. $4,000 Street price of an RTX 5090 Thanks for reading. See you tomorrow.Tech 24 |
